About the Author

Campbell Gibson retired from the U.S. Census Bureau in 2006 after a 35-year career, most recently as Senior Demographer in Population Division. In addition to earlier positions in the Fertility Statistics Branch and in the Population Projections Branch, where he served as Chief, he served as Demographic Statistics Advisor to the Saudi-American Joint Economic Commission in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 1978-1981 and 1993-1995. His publications include numerous Census Bureau reports and journal articles, including several publications on historical demographic trends and reference works on historical demographic statistics for the United States. He designed the statistical content for several publications from the 1990 census and several data sets from the 2000 census on the Census Bureau’s website.


Dr. Gibson received a bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in demography from the University of California at Berkeley. In retirement, he developed a website, American Demographic History Chartbook: 1790 to 2010 that provides over 100 graphics portraying the demographic history of the United States, as shown by data from the decennial census of population.
